Christmas 2017

This year my family and I were able to spend 3 days in Chesapeake with friends/adopted family.  We had a great time, and lots of memories were made.

When we arrived on the 23rd, we had a fantastic dinner awaiting us ... and Sangeria.

Me and Mom

Me and Dad

Me and Rhey
No, she is not drinking wine!  She felt left out and put her root beer in a wine glass lol.
Dec. 24th :
Mimi, Rhey, and I worked together and got Christmas dinner ready.  We enjoyed cooking, laughing, and talking with each other.

Mimi and Rhey took a break and went on a hunt for Brazilian nuts.  Meanwhile, I was being sneaky and took a picture!

They were in charge of the main meal ...

... while I was in charge of making the salad ...

... and finger foods

Nick and I went on a walk the pond ...

<3

Begging to go on another walk

Nick loved cuddle time with his new friend Lexis

So blessed to have this guy as my dad!!
Thankful to have her as my life-long best friend

Miracles happen!  We managed to get a family picture taken lol!
All in all, Christmas this year was great!  I'm thankful to have spent it with my family!

5 Life Lessons I've Learned as a "Waitress"

Hi, how are you today?”
“I’m good and yourself?”
I’m doing pretty good, what can I get for you?”
…. and so the order begins

If you would have told me five months ago that the job behind the above conversation would teach me lessons, I would have just given you a blank stare and said “Seriously?? Uh huh …. suuuuure.” I would have silently called you crazy, or maybe would have thought you were running low on sleep. However, after being a waitress for five months, I totally understand now. Waitressing in and of itself is a perfect opportunity for learning valuable life lessons.

Lesson 1: Attitude
Your customers can sense your attitude even when you can’t, which will affect how they treat you … and the tip they leave you. So make sure to reevaluate yourself, wear your gorgeous smile, and be happy :)
**I haven’t experienced this lesson yet … nor do I ever want to. But I have witnessed it with two co-workers, and one was actually fired for his bad attitude.

Lesson 2: Conversation & Connection
I’ve read countless stories from waitresses who say that the greeting part is their least favorite, only because it gets old really fast. The thing about it is, is you have to be willing to make conversation and make a connection with your customers. I will change up the conversation depending on who the customer is.
If young guys walk in I may say “how are you gentlemen today?”
If a family walks in with their adorable 2 year old, I’ll greet the parents and then start a conversation with the two year old. (Thursday, the two year old and I talked about his favorite teddy bear <3)
Connection is key, because they can tell if you’re there to only make money, or if you truly love your job. Making the customers happy isn’t only by bringing them their food, it’s about giving them the best experience they can have.

Lesson 3: Phone skills
Before I started working, my phone skills were awful. I couldn’t really carry on a conversation with a random person. If you weren’t one of the three friends that I talked to on the phone, yeah well … forget it haha.
Answering the phone to take to-go orders has tremendously helped me in this area. I can finally carry on a conversation with a random person, and there not be an awkward silence! (okay I take that back … there still is, but it’s only when they can’t decide on something to order. For reals, what am I supposed to say? Haha)

Lesson 4: Confidence
When I first started my job as a waitress/counter-person, I was not confident in who Alisha was.  I was always wanting to please those around me.  However, I have learned that in order to really succeed at this job, you need to have confidence in yourself. If you are constantly worried about the job you’re doing, you’re bound to make more mistakes (trust me on this one).
Be you ... not who someone else thinks you should be.

Lesson 5: Laugh at yourself
Mistakes are bound to happen.  Especially if you are slammed and everyone and their long distant relative decides to either dine in, order take out, or call in a delivery.  Whether the mistake is sounding as if you cannot speak, ringing someone up wrong on the register, totaling up a delivery order wrong, etc.  So what are you to do in a situation like this?  Easy ... just laugh at yourself.
This is a recent lesson I have learned.  It seems kinda weird at first, but after a while it almost becomes like a second nature.
Before, I would worry that the customers were judging me (this kinda ties into lesson 4).  Five months ago, I would apologize profusely for any mistake I made around them.  Now, the conversation goes something like this:
"Uh oh ... ooops.  Well ... will you look at that, another void needs to be made, I think that makes the second one today.  Let's try this one more time!  After all, they say 'third time's the charm', right?"
When you take on this attitude, it helps relieve the stress you're feeling, it calms everyone else down too, and I have personally found that it actually increases tips.  Why's that?  Because the customers see that you have a great outlook on trying times ... and it helps make their experience enjoyable!

What are some recent life lessons you've learned?
I'd love to hear what you have to say ;)

The Bible & Contradictions // The Mission Field Series

(This is the first post in “The Mission Field” series)

“How can one believe the Bible? It’s full of contradictions … it even contradicts itself!”

C’mon Ali, you’ve completed Bible school … you have to have an answer for this. I thought to myself as I stood there appalled at what I just heard.

The Bible may seem that it’s full of contradictions, or that it even contradicts itself. Just trust me when I say that it doesn’t contradict itself.”

But it does! It does contradict itself. So if it’s full of contradictions, then we can’t believe it.”

But that’s the thing, we can believe it, because it’s the infallible Word of God. What contradictions are you referring to?”

God says He hates jealousy, however, He Himself is a jealous God. Explain that one.

That’s right, God doesn’t want His children to be jealous of others. But that’s an attribute of His, because He is the One True God – He has every right to be jealous when we give our worship to anyone/anything other than Him.”

This was a conversation I had with a coworker last week while I was working an all day shift at the restaurant. It shocked me to hear what was being said (don’t know why I was shocked, I’ve heard it before), not to mention … I was saddened. Not only was I realizing the seriousness of this coworker’s eternity, but I could not for the life of me remember Bible verses that could explain the exact opposite of what this person was saying. Like always, the devil didn’t want me to have the opportunity to be apart of bringing another into the fold (1 Pet. 2:25)

It’s been almost a week since that conversation, and I’ve still (to this day) mulled over the conversation. Praying God would show me how to bring Truth out of what my coworker had said/and believes (basically to twist it around to Christ). Then God did the amazing, it was like a Spiritual light-bulb moment.

The Bible doesn’t contradicts itself. It contradicts us, because our brains cannot comprehend what the Bible says, or because we have our own interpretation of the Bible.

(I don’t know why this couldn’t have come to me, almost a week ago lol)

When I discussed my God given “light-bulb moment” with my parents, my dad said something else that has stuck with me.

Anyone can say anything is contradictory. When someone doesn’t understand the ‘why’ behind something, it seems contradictory. It takes understanding to get rid of contradiction.”

Which is totally true, that’s why Proverbs tells us to get wisdom and understanding.

But that didn’t satisfy me at all. I had to know more, so I could help my coworker see that the Word doesn’t contradict itself. A new question arose in my mind:
So if it takes understanding to get rid of contradiction, and the Bible doesn’t contradict itself, but yet still seems that way to a nonbeliever – is there a middle ground?

For some there is a middle ground in regards to contradiction.

What do I mean by a middle ground? Let me explain it this way:

The Bible is God’s Word to humankind, I’m sure the majority can agree with me on this. However, it has also been mediated through authors that are man (or human). So there could be mistakes, yes? After all … humankind isn’t perfect. And if it’s God’s Word, wouldn’t have God actually written the Bible Himself? This in and of itself is a contradiction, yes?
The middle ground are for those still searching for answers, but who believe. Those who can’t fathom how the Bible doesn’t contradict itself.

Does the Bible contradict itself?

First off, let’s take a look at a couple definitions: the definition of “contradiction” and of “difference”.

contradiction
[kon-truh-dik-shuhn]

1. the act of contradicting’ gainsaying or opposition
2. assertion of the contrary or opposite; denial

difference
[dif-er-uh ns, dif-ruh ns]

1. the state or relation of being different; dissimilarity
2. an instance or point of unlikeness or dissimilarity

Now that we know those definitions, let’s put them into the context of our question.

There are two accounts of Jesus’ lineage (Matt. 1 & Luke 1). These are known as “one of the contradictory passages”.
These passages show us that there are two different lineages, however – Jesus only had one earthly parent. How could this be??? This is a huge contradiction, therefore I won’t believe it!

Why are there two passages when Jesus had one earthly parent?

Matthew 1 gives us the lineage of Jesus’ earthly father, Joseph.
Luke 1 gives us the lineage of Jesus’ mother, Mary.

See – not a contradiction … just a difference ;)
The contradiction would be:

Matthew 1 gives us the lineage of Jesus’ earthly father, Joseph. While Luke 1 gives the lineage of Jesus’ mother Mary, who conceived Jesus through Joseph.

A couple other passages that breed contradiction, are the death accounts of Judas Iscariot (Matt. 27:5 & Acts 1:18).

Matthew 27:5 tells us that Judas hung himself
Acts 1:18 tells us that Judas fell headlong, and all of his organs gushed out

Again, this is not a contradiction … just a difference.

But Alisha, these passages are contradictions! They give two different accounts of Judas’ death!”

Yes they do, however, let’s put it in a couple different perspectives, shall we?

1. Let’s say Judas did hang himself like in Matthew 27:5. And a couple days, his body decayed, the rope snapped – making him falling headlong, and causing all of his organs to gush out (just like in Acts 1:18).

2. Let’s say Judas attempted to hang himself Matt. 27:5), but it didn’t work well for him (I would probably chicken out too – just saying). So instead he fell off a cliff (Acts 1:18).

Does it really matter how the man died? No it doesn’t! What matters, is that both accounts say he died (by his own means), and they named the field he purchased the Field of Blood. How he died is irrelevant!

The contradiction to these passages would be:
Matthew 27:5 says he hung himself, while Acts 1:18 says he went and purchased a field and lived a long life – regretting the betrayal he displayed towards Jesus.

The last “contradiction” is a “big one”. It has to do with a matter of faith, rather than facts.

Paul tells us three different times in Romans (3:20, 28; 5:1), that our faith is justified through Christ alone, and not our works. But yet in James 2:24 Paul tells us that a man is justified through works.

So which is it?

We have to look at the context of the word justification in all the passages.

In Romans, we see that justification is in regards to standing before God, while in James 2:24 justification is in regards to standing before people.

So yes, our faith isn’t justified through works in order to be saved, but once we’re saved – we need to be showing the fruits of the Spirit to those around us.

The contradiction for these passages would be:
Romans tells us that we are justified through Christ alone, and that James would tell us that we need works to get to heaven.

I could go on and on about the different “contradictions” the Bible seems to contain, but I won’t.

Instead of ironing out every single “contradiction” the Bible looks like it contains, we need to focus on how we can apply it to our lives as individuals. We need to focus on how we can be the change we want to see in the world.

It’s all in how we read Scripture!

We have to be careful to not presuppose what Scripture is saying in regards to a particular view, and then try to stuff it into our preconceived notion. We have to be willing to allow the Holy Spirit to convict us with Scriptures He wishes to convict us with.

I hope this post helped some out there, who have wondered why the Bible “contradicts” itself. I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic, so be sure to leave a comment below ;)

Hello World

Here I am again .... after a long while of silence on the blog.
I would say I'm sorry ... but I'm sure the "I'm sorry's" are getting old!

Allow me to fill you in on what my life has consisted of lately:

→ I went to Dallas for three weeks back in May (a post will be hitting the blog soon ... I hope)

→ I am now working two part time jobs.  The busyness of life now is taking some getting used to, but I love it.  It's a great way to keep your mind off certain things and just grow, spread your wings ... and learn.
The first job I'm working is at a small Italian restaurant.  I'm a "waitress"/cashier, and I absolutely love my job there.  I'm a people person, so it's the perfect job for me 😊
The second job I'm working is at a friend's father's place.  I'm a personal health care provider, and that's taking some getting used to.

So yeah, that's really all I've been up to lately lol!  Nothing too special ... but not too boring either.  Each day is a new adventure and I'm loving all the adventures life is sending my way!

Just so y'all know ... I have a couple posts in the works, so hopefully I will be posting them sometime in the near future 😉

Until next time

The Millennial Excuse

A new common term has sprung up in our society in just very recent times - “millennial generation”. Alright, alright – the term itself isn’t new, but it seems to have sprung up recent conversations in Christian and non-Christian circles.

What is the “Millennial generation” exactly?

According to Live Science, the “Millennial generation” is defined as follows:

“The term Millennial's generally refers to the generation of people born between the early 1980’s and the early 2000’s. Perhaps the most commonly used birth range for this group is 1982-2000.”

It is in this specific generation, that the “reputations” of adults/young adults has been ruined.

What do I mean by this?
If we tear this “popular generation” apart, we may understand it a little better. So let’s look at the reasons one by one shall we.

Reason 1 : the “Millennial generation” is known by either the Peter Pan generation or the Boomerang generation.
Why these titles?
The reason this generation has been given the titles Peter Pan and Boomerang are for very obvious (and rather disappointing/discouraging) reasons.

Adults/young adults born from 1982-2000 are commonly known as the following:

1) They are flighty and lack stability
Like Peter Pan, they aren’t willing to grow up – nor are they (for the majority) encouraged. Which leads to the following:
- bouncing from job to job
- going from their parents house, to their own, back to their parent’s house, back to their own (I’m sure you get the picture)

2) They don’t take responsibility for their actions
Adults/young adults today always have an “out” to their responsibilities – no matter what. They aren’t encouraged to take responsibility for their own actions. One of three things happens:
1) they find the easy way out
2) they get out of “it” completely
3) their parents end up taking the responsibility.

For example:
a girl (within this specific generation) gets pregnant. She ends up either 1) giving her child up for adoption (the easy way out), 2) having an abortion (getting out of it completely), or 3) her parents tell her that they will take care of her baby so she can have her life back and have fun (their parents end up taking responsibility).

What’s the problem with the above example? (I’m not pointing fingers, just being honest and sharing my heart about this)

1. Who’s fault is it?
We could play the blame game on who’s fault it is. I mean c’mon, the blame game is common in this generation, right?

We could blame the girl for not saving herself, the guy for allowing himself to be caught up in the moment, them both for not being responsible in their actions, the parents for not teaching their children properly, God for allowing her to get pregnant, or the devil for putting the temptation before the “couple”.

Let’s pause for a moment, so I can explain something.

Who are we to blame God for bringing evil to fruition?
It is NOT God’s fault that the girl got pregnant. It’s NOT His fault that the guy couldn’t control himself. It’s NOT His fault that the parents didn’t teach their children properly.

Yes the girl got pregnant, but God didn’t allow it. The pregnancy occurred because it is a consequence from the sin that was committed. Sin has a consequence, whether it’s here in the now, or later on down the road.

However, God WILL use the pregnancy for His good and His glory. He will take the evil, and make it good. I have seen it happen, heard accounts of this happening, and know it to be TRUE.

Okay, back to the post.

So again, who’s fault is it?
It’s certainly not God’s fault, we’ve already discussed that (and the reason behind it). We could use the devil, because “he made it to where we couldn’t control ourselves”.

It’s actually the parent’s fault!

2. Why blame parents?
Just because I say that it’s the parent’s fault, doesn’t excuse the “couple” for their irresponsibility. They too are wrong, and for that they are going to face the consequences for their actions. However, if they were raised the way most young people are being raised today, they didn’t know any better.

Parents today have not raised their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. They do not encourage their children to live a life that’s set apart from society, to resist the devil and flee (see James 4:7-8), to live a life of total surrender, purity, to live their lives pleasing to God.

Instead, they want their children to experience the world, have a life they never had, have fun, express themselves, and just be “kids”. After all, kids will be kids, right?

This mindset that parents have has ruined this generation (and the generation to come!). It has ruined the “reputation”.

Parents have created young people who use the excuses:

“Well, ‘this’ is wrong with me. So I can’t hold a job.”
“I’m not going to do ‘this’ because it’s over my head.”
“I don’t like how it doesn’t affect me.”
… and other excuses.

The reputation for this specific generation has been so called “ruined” because no one expects more from them because of what their parents have instituted early on. Instead they have instituted a “me focused” mentality into young adults in this specific generation (and the generation to follow).

But have the parent’s “lack of knowledge” affected only the reputation? Absolutely not. Young people from today’s society haven’t been the only ones affected. Christian young adults have been affected as well.

Because the vast majority of the young people have set the “standard” in the generation, it makes it very hard for Christian young people to live set apart. The “standard” is now seeping into the minds of Christian young adults today, which means the possibility for affecting the world for the cause of Christ is diminishing rapidly.

Christian young adults are leaving the faith, quitting church, and giving up on the cause of Christ due to the mentality parents have instituted.

In Christian families you have parents who want their children to live better than they did. They want their children to live differently than the world – pleasing God and attempting to live a holy life.
Now don’t get me wrong, that is totally awesome! I am totally all for that, however, what parents don’t realize is that their children don’t attempt to search out their own faith. They are simply living the way they’ve been raised, because “Mom and Dad says this the only way to live life.”

They never get to experience the freedom that comes with living out their own faith.
They are never able to fully understand the underlying reason behind some convictions.
They don’t understand the danger in living out the faith of their parents.

The majority of parents today, don’t bother encouraging their children to search out their own faith.

Let me ask a question to any parents reading this post:

“What’s the reason behind not allowing your children search out their own faith? Is it because you’re afraid they may make the same mistakes you have made in your past? Is it because you’re concerned they will play with the evils of this world? Do you bother telling them why you have instituted certain convictions in your household?”

If the answers to those questions were “yes”, then let me ease your mind and help you understand the mindset of a child.

“Don’t be so quick to withhold the reasons behind certain convictions within your household/family. It makes a difference when you tell your children why you dress a certain way, why they won’t be allowed to ‘date’, why you don’t say certain words. Instead of saying ‘because we said so’ or ‘because that’s what we’ve decided, deal with it’, explain the why behind the convictions. It makes it easier when they start to search out their own faith.Allowing your children to search out their own faith, is the best thing that you (as a parent) can do. As a child who was allowed to search out her own faith, I can say it has truly helped me discover who I am in Christ and as an individual. If you have raised your children in the fear and admonition of the Lord, all you have to do is guide, direct, and pray that your children see the Biblical way and the good in how you’ve raised them. They cannot always have training wheels in use, the training wheels need to come off eventually. And with taking the ‘training wheels’ off, comes the fact that you need to be willing to pick them up when they fall. You need to be willing to withhold scolding if they make a fumble. You need to be encouraging in second chances. I wish I could say that your children searching out their own faith, will result in no worldliness coming in. I speak from experience, searching out their own faith will mean that they will try to include some of the world, but make it godly. Not allowing them to search out their own faith may result in your children backsliding, leaving the faith completely, giving up on church, etc. They may take a drastic leap the other direction and start living their life in a way that will be hard for you to accept as a parent. You may find yourself hard to love your own child because of their drastic lifestyle change. However, if you allow them to search out their own faith while they’re living under your protection, they will find that they have a place of refuge when they make a fumble. They will find that they can come to you in regards to differing beliefs and opinions. They will see that you trust them to make their own decisions in life, which will encourage them to step above the ‘standard’ in the “Millennial generation” has set. Instead of hindering them, you’re encouraging them to grow.Don’t hesitate in allowing your children to search and grow in their own faith.”

Why are young people leaving the faith and giving up on church?

My theory is as follows:

“Because young aren’t able to seek out their own faith within the safety of their parents home, they are like a bird trapped in a cage. They are being too sheltered, wanting to spread their wings of faith (and when they do spread, the wings are clipped). They begin to realize that they don’t believe the same way as their parents, but as they continue to hear their parents bash other denominations, they decide to keep quiet. The pastor of their church decides to get the advice from the young people within his church. Advice on how to include young people more, to make church greater, to reach out to the young people within the community, and just to get a fresh perspective. When the advice is given, the pastor pushes it to the wayside, because “they’re only kids”. So they decide that they don’t want any part of church, because they aren’t being looked upon as the decision making young adults they truly are. However, their actions begin to change, because God is growing their faith anyways. Their eyes are being open to the legalism within their own church, within their family, within their friendship circles, etc. So when it comes time to be on their own, they jump at the chance as quickly as possible. Leaving behind what they know faith to be. Why? Because – why be a part of such a legalistic, constricting “faith”? They can do just as great in life with out being constricted, without all the legalism, condemnation, etc. So they leave the faith. Do they give up on church? No of course not, they have to go to church, because they have to be there every time the doors are open, and they are called to not forsake the gathering of believers. So they have not only left the faith, but have also left church. They no longer want religion, and quit reading their Bible, give up on their passionate prayer life, etc. They decide to denounce God and live like a child of the world, and not of God.”

What is wrong with this?
Again, let’s tear this apart and see the flaws within the mindset of all this.

1. The young people weren’t able to seek out their own faith.
- I’ve already discussed the importance of seeking out your own faith (just scroll up a bit and read if you can’t remember)
- The “wings of faith” should never be clipped or constricted. They should be allowed to spread out to their full capacity, full length, ever growing.
- If young people realize that they don’t exactly believe the same way as the denomination that they were raised in, it’s not a hill to die on. We all are called to walk in faith, but everyone’s walk is different. If they aren’t involved in cults, or drastically diverse religions, they are fine. Let God grow them to be who He created them to be.

2. The young people aren’t looked at as the person they truly are.
- It’s a pastor’s job to encourage the young people within his church congregation to be more than they think they are.
- If a pastor wants a fresh perspective, and asks for the advice from young people – then he needs to be willing to listen and use discernment in heeding it.
- The young people need to be encouraged to serve within their church, and it’s the pastor’s job to institute this. If the pastor sees that there are young men that are students of the Word, might he encourage them to preach a sermon? If it’s known that there are young women who are gifted in discipling young women, might he encourage them to start a girl’s Bible study group? It’s the pastor’s job to reach out and encourage the next generation to step above the common standard that the world has set.

Once young people are seen for who God has made them to be, what they’re capable of, and are recognized for their God-given talents/gifts – the young people will feel the urge to stay and serve in the Kingdom.

However, there is one major problem with this specific generation (and I stated it a while back). This generation is very me focused.

You hear today:

“Well I left the church because I didn’t like the fact that the church didn’t do anything for me.”
I don’t do church because it just wants my money.”
“Church isn’t what I need.”

Okay, I’m going to brutally honest, and just plain blunt.

It’s NOT about you!

It’s not about what church does for you, but what you can do for the church.

Ask yourself the following three questions:

How can you effectively serve within the church, and advance the Kingdom?
How much are you willing to give monetary wise, in order to advance the Kingdom? The poor woman gave everything she had, and she was incredibly blessed! (see Mark 12:42-44)
What if you are what the church needs?

I would like to point out two examples of selfless people that serve the church on a regular basis.

The pastor:
he isn’t (or shouldn’t be) there for himself. He’s there to be the mouth piece for God.

The deacons:
they aren’t there for themselves. They are there to offer spiritual and moral support for the pastor. They help him make church decisions and help keep him accountable.

Yes, they enjoy the position in which they serve and there’s nothing wrong with that. The important thing to remember is this: they are there to serve God, not themselves.

Church isn’t about serving you, but about you serving the church.

With all that said, how can we put an end to this “popular trend”?

As young people within this generation, we need to show the world that we have stepped above the common standard. Yes it will be hard – but think of the rewards.

We will become radical in our faith, not our parent’s.
We will reach the next generation and set a new standard for them.
We will learn to have a servant’s heart, and grow in our God-given talents.

When we make the decision to “debunk” this worldview, we are silently saying:

We’ve had enough of the inadequacy, and are more than what you claim we are. It’s time to show you who God has made us to be!”

Who’s ready to step above the common standard, set a new standard, and debunk this worldview?

Currently In the Life of Alisha

I decided that I would share with you all what I have been doing lately - and some will explain why my blog has been silent.  No theey aren't excuses, but hey, it's time the silence had an explanation  ðŸ˜‰

1) Making priorities in 2017
I know, why hasn't the blog been a priority, right?  I really want to make 2017 the year I  start deciding what's important.  Last year, the number of posts and comments I had here on Alisha In Progress was the top priority.  Around December, God brought to light that "priority" and laid upon my heart to draw ever closer to Him.
With that said, I will not be forsaking the blog, but I may not be posting as much as I have the past couple years.  We'll see how God directs ðŸ™‚

2) School
God laid on my heart in January to really focus on growing my knowledge of His word by doing online Bible school.  In 2016 I started The School of Biblical Evangelism and January 2017 I received my diploma.
As of January 2017, I have enrolled into my second year of Bible school - and that is what has been keeping me busy.

3) New family dynamics
As of January, our family dynamics have changed.  We are no longer a family of four, but of five.
No Mom hasn't had another baby, but we are helping out a family friend with having her son live with us.  It's definitely a change from what we have known all this time, but we can't wait to see what God does in the lives of all the parties involved. ðŸ™‚

4) Writing
No I haven't been writing blog posts, but know that I do have some in the works.  I have been writing a second book (and working on completing the first).  Once I get far enough, I'll share more about these two projects  ðŸ˜‰

So while there hasn't been a ton of new stuff (nor real too exciting stuff) that's been happening in my life, there ya have it folks.

What have you been doing lately?

I  hope to get another post up soon!
Until next time ...

What About Crushes?

(not to reader: I do not think I have the right answer to this topic … or any others I write about. This is something I’m passionate about, and want to share my thoughts with you. I am not bashing any groups of people in any way. We all live our lives according to what we think is right)

Crushes. The seven letter word that has different meanings to different groups of people.

To some having a crush is looked down upon. Considered an absolute abomination. They tell their child that if they ever have a crush, then they need to go to God and ask for forgiveness.

To some, crushes are a natural part of life. I guess it could be as natural as the rainfall.

It’s something that parents somewhat look forward to in their child’s life … and what they also regret to come to fruition. They encourage their child to give it to God and not to dwell on their crush.

Then you’ve got the people who long for the day their child has a crush on someone. The parents (along with other family members) encourage the child to go out of his/her way to get attention from the crush. They allow the child to put pictures of their crush on their wall, mirror, etc. They get excited when the child and their crush share their entire heart with each other and become bf / gf.

Just recently I heard a conversation in the library that went somewhat like this:

(I have obviously changed the names for privacy sake)

Sally, I need help! I just found out that Jane has a crush on a boy at co-op.”

Molly, don’t encourage her! Crushes are a sin. Here’s what I suggest: take her out of the co-op and join a new one, take her out of AWANA, don’t let her go to youth group. Oh and when it comes to Friday night fellowship, she needs to stay by your side … or Joe’s side. You can not allow her to take part in that sin.”

When I heard this conversation, it made my heart sink. I knew that everyone had different views of crushes, but I didn’t understand the vast differences.

Now, I know we all live our lives to what we think to be right. But Sally’s point of view baffled me, and greatly confused me. Until the answer came to me - light bulb moment everyone.

What Sally recommended to Molly was not the answer. She was only encouraging avoiding the “problem”. Sure they can do all the suggested to Jane, but that will only cause her to resent her parents (and quite possibly Sally). It doesn’t speak to the heart of the problem (even though there isn’t one). Until they address the “problem”, they will always encounter the exact same thing with Jane.

Crushes themselves are not a sin, a problem, the cause of repentance, etc.

They are, as I stated in the beginning, as natural as the rainfall. No matter what, they will happen. It’s only when you don’t take your thoughts captive, that having a crush becomes a “problem”. If you think so and so is cute. Fine, but leave your thoughts there. Give your crush to God, pray for so and so’s future (without including you in it), and determine to treat him as the brother-in-Christ he is. Trust me, these steps truly help!

I know that some people reading this post, may be thinking that I have no room to talk about this. To some degree they are right. But I look at it this way, we all have mistakes to be made, lessons to be learned, and a voice to be heard.

Yes I made a mistake (who doesn’t?). Yes, I’ve learned my lesson (I’m sure all of you have too). And I have a voice that needs to be heard (no matter what!).

So, what about crushes?

What about them? They are bound to happen, no matter how many times you repent, how ever many co-ops you pull out of, etc. You can have a crush on someone who lives a few states away (I speak from experience).

Also, let’s talk about some other circumstances.

Interest.
How do you think interest comes about. It comes about through a crush. So and so finds someone extremely attractive (to them). They finally get the opportunity to get to know their crush (whom they’ve given to God).

Marriage.
I don’t know about your parents, but mine still have a crush on the other. They don’t necessarily have to control their crush … because they’re married.

In my opinion, crushes in-and-of themselves aren’t sinful. It all depends on how you control them.

If you have a crush on someone, don’t put their pictures on your wall, mirror, etc. Don’t let your thoughts wander to be inappropriate. Don’t flaunt yourself. (I think you get the general idea)

Now, here’s something else that’s necessary.

After you give your crush to God and pray for him, start making Jesus your First Love. Start having a crush on the Man who thinks you’re to die for ;)

So take your crush captive, give it to God, pray for him/her (in case we have guys reading this post), and start having a crush on your Savior.
