Learning the Art of Joy

Sin separates us from God.
Sin requires us to take ownership.
These two statements are simple to let our minds grasp.  Yes they are abrupt, yes they hurt … but sometimes the truth hurts.

When we live a life of sin, we cannot learn how to live a life of joy.  It's nearly impossible!

Like I said in my first statement:
sin separates from God!

How can we be separated from God, live a sinful life, but yet live a life of joy?  That's absolutely contradictory to the Word of God!

“The lost live a sinful but joyful life!  So it's not impossible.”

What you see in the life of the lost, isn't joy … it's temporary happiness (or pleasure).

Let's look at the difference between happiness and joy, that way we can clear up any confusion before we go any further.

H A P P I N E S S  is a blurred emotion and is temporary.

J O Y  is an attitude of the heart.

So yes, the lost live a sinful yet “happy” life.  But their happiness is much like the common fashion trends … in one minute and “so last season” the next.  Their happiness revolves on pleasures and what they can get out of something for them.  Their happiness is ME focused.

So again I say:
we cannot learn how to live a life of joy.  It's nearly impossible!

So what's the secret?  How can we learn the art of joy?

I'm going to be totally honest with y'all …
I'm just now learning this as well, so I'm sharing what God has shown me

To learn the art of joy, we first need to take ownership of our sin.

“What does it mean to take ownership of our sin?”

It means to have a repentant heart, and turn away from our sin. (Psalm 51)
It means to take the words of a children's Bible song to heart
The world behind me, the cross before me
It means to flee youthful lusts. (2 Timothy 2:22)

If you are a child of God whose rebelled, let me have a little heart to heart with you.  From one rebellious child to another:
I have been where you are, and it's the worst place to be.
I've been at the point of thinking God has forgotten about you, and therefore taking things into my own hands.
I bare the scares on my heart because of the consequences I faced due to my rebellion to the will of God.
I know what you're feeling.  I know what you're facing.
But let me tell you this, taking ownership of the sin (rebellion to God and His will is sin too, sweet one), will be the best decision you've ever made this year!  Defeat the devil, crush him, remind him who won the battle 2,000 years ago.  Submit to God, and resist the devil (James 4:7).  Once you submit to God, take ownership of the sin, and turn away, you will feel the burden lift.

If you are lost, then let me have a heart to heart with you as well:

I was once where you are currently, and your current state doesn't get any better.
Heaven is real, and so is Hell.
Life is fleeting, and you aren't promised tomorrow.
If you were to die today and stand before Almighty God, and He were to ask you “why should I let you into Heaven?”, what would you tell Him?
Your eternity is not something to be put on the back burner, because like I said you aren't promised tomorrow.
God wants you to enter into His family (and so do I).  God loves you so much that He sent His Son to die for you on the cross at Calvary, and rise again three days later.
The Bible says “now is the day of salvation!” (2 Corinthians 6:2)
Will you be able to say the same thing?

Okay, so now that our heart to heart is over, and we know what it means to take ownership of sin, let's focus our attention on perfecting joy.

Jesus gives us the answer to learning/perfecting joy in John 15:9-12 :

“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.  If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.  These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.” (emphasis is mine)

What does it mean to abide in His love?  It means to never depart from Him.
Abide is derived from the English word “abode” which is another word for dwelling place.
When we accept Him into our hearts, He abides within us, never leaving or forsaking us.  Therefore, we are to do the same … we are to dwell in His presence, never leaving Him.

How do we keep His commandments?
We keep His commandments by walking out the two biggies (as our pastor likes to say):

love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength
love your neighbor as yourself

However, keeping His commandments doesn't stop there.

Love is a verb (as DC Talk states in their song), and not the ushy gushy feeling.  We need to put love into action.

So how do we put love into action?

We put it into action by changing our old ways, and walking out the life God has called us to.
It's put into action by allowing the Holy Spirit to penetrate our hearts in areas of hidden and/or visible sin.

Putting love into action is different for every single person on this earth.  It could be as simple as:

*changing the way you dress
*changing the way you speak
*hanging out with a different group of people
… this list could go on

Or it could be more challenging (yet beneficial) as:

*getting accountability because you struggle with lust/adultery
*deciding to quit drinking
*deciding to quit smoking
… this list could go on as well

So, in simple (and fewer words): we keep His commandments by putting on the “new man” (2 Corinthians 5:17) and by putting love into action.
“So that's it?  That's the secret to joy?”

Yes, that's it … there you have it, the secret to joy.

I'm about to become a pessimist for a second (here goes … gulp)
It will not be easy!  We will never reach our full potential of a joy-filled life, until we reach our life in Glory.

(okay … I survived.  But if you don't mind, I'd like to switch over to my optimistic self again)

Yes it will be a constant battle between flesh and spirit, but it will be totally worth it.  This is another way we are called to run the Race.  Think of the rewards:

our joy will be made full.  Full of who?  Our Savior
we will be called His friend (John 15:15)
we will hear “well done good and faithful servant”

… and my absolute favorite …

we will discover contentment along the way.

Make joy the attitude of your heart and embark on learning the art of joy!

Living Loved

the title of this post was taken from the theme of Lysa Terkeurst's book "Uninvited"

Since I've been home, the Lord has been reaching out to me in ways that He's never reached out before.

While I was in Ghana, I went through a huge struggle (and am just now recovering from it).  God laid it on my mom's heart to purchase a book for me called "Uninvited" by Lysa TerKeurst.  Her theme for the book is living loved.  I have only read the first three chapters, but last night I felt like God challenged me to figure out what living loved meant for me.

This post are my thoughts on what it means ... hope you all learn from my rambles :)

The human race seems to run on this word.  We use it when talking to our family, friends, and our jobs (well, some of us do anyways lol).

We long to be loved by a guy.  To have him look down at us and say "I love you sweetheart".

We all long to be loved by a child.  To have him wrap his tiny arms around our neck and say "I love you Mommy".

But do we long to be loved by my King?  To have Him bend down, wrap His strong and mighty arms around us, and say "it's okay baby girl, I've got you and I wont' let go.  I know you're hurting, but I'm here to heal that hurt.  Love me, and only Me.  Walk through this life knowing you are loved, loved by Me dear one.  I love you sweetheart!"

Living loved looks different me than it does for my mom and vice versa.  However, the foundation is the same ... she is still loved by her King.

So how can we live loved?

// find our joy & strength in the Lord - Nehemiah 8:10

// get lost in our King's love for me & be content - Hebrews 13:5

// be strong in the Lord - Ephesians 6:10

// extend mercy & love to others - 1 John 3:11-24

Verses on God's love for us:

Zephaniah 3:17 // 1 John 4:7-8 // 1 Peter 5:6-7 // Job 34:19 // Psalm 86:15 // 1 John 3:1
So are you ready?  Are you ready to experience love from the King like no other love?

I pray that this helped someone, I know it helped me a whole lot.

21st Celebration

As I said yesterday, I am back in the blogging world.  And as my mom said in her post on here, I went to DC.
Miss Linda took decided to take me to the Embassy of Ghana, so I could get my visa for my upcoming mission trip.  She used the visa as a ploy so we could stay with her son and I could have a memorable 21st birthday.  Here are pictures I took along the way (and some that Miss Linda took).  Enjoy ;)

April 4th, 2016:

Me and Rhey getting ready to head on out to DC with Miss Linda

Road trips are the greatest with aviator sun glasses and Pandora Radio ;)

April 5th, 2016:

One of the neighborhoods near the Embassy of Ghana.  I fell in love with the beauty of this neighborhood :)

Me, Rhey, and Miss Linda at the Washington National Cathedral

Me, Miss Linda, and Rhey having lunch

After lunch, we went to the Pentagon City Mall and walked around

I found this cute cup {but I didn't buy it} - and it expressed e.x.a.c.t.l.y how I feel ;)

Lee (Miss Linda's son) took the three of us out to dinner at Mike's Grill.  He left the table, using the excuse of "I don't see something on the menu.  I'll be right back", and told the waitress that it was my birthday.  I was shocked when I saw my birthday dessert - it was heavenly btw ;)

April 6th, 2016:
Since the beginning of this year, I have wanted to get my picture with a cop.  Don't ask me why, but it was something that I had on my 2016 bucket list.  It just so happened that Lee is a cop, so Miss Linda arranged with him for me to get that desired picture :D

"Let the attitude show ... you're 21 now!  C'mon baby, c'mon ... lean in!"

After the pictures were taken, Lee started clearing out the passenger seat of the police car.  I didn't think anything of it, and then all of a sudden I heard Miss Linda say "get in Ali".  I was so confused lol ... Lee told me "C'mon, let's ride ... get in girl".  I got in and off we were.  Lee had arranged with his boss for me to go on a ride along.  It was his idea - and I had a blast.  We ended up pulling two people over ... I thought it was the neatest experience!  I'd love to go on a full shift ride along sometime (we'll see if that comes about lol).

Connor {Lee's dog} and I became best buds while I was there.

When we got home, my parents surprised me with two things:
~ luggage for my trip
~ a sister road trip to KY to visit friends

I had the most awesome 21st birthday ... it will be one I remember for the rest of my life!

#sistalove

Life with my not so little sis Rhey would be so boring.  I don't know what I would do without her in my life.  She is my no.1 bestie ... my partner in crime ... the friend who has seen me in the best of times, and stood by my side in my darkest of times.

So in honor of our everlasting, ever growing, unbreakable sister/friendship ... here are pictures!!!  (the first three pictures were taken just today)

yes y'all ... my almost 15 year old sista is much taller than her almost 21 year old sister ;P

Rhey + I have started a tradition of going to Sweet Frog Forzen Yogurt ...

Being In Reckless Abandon

In my last post I explained why I believe the way I do!  But lately, I haven't shared with what God has shared with me lately!

I'm finally in total reckless abandon in Him - and have finally reached the point of true contentment!
Yes I still desire to serve a man I call "my hubbers", but it's not my every waking thought and no longer a raging desire.
Having a man in my life will not going to solve any loneliness I may feel - only My Lover (Christ) can solve!
However, I still long to serve the man God has for me - whoever it may be, whenever He sees fit to put him in my life.  But I think God hasn't shown me or revealed who the man is, because I have never fully understood that marriage isn't meant to fulfill me.  Marriage is meant to depict Christ and His Bride.

"Then what is marriage suppose to be or even do??"

Marriage is to fulfill the image of Christ loving His Bride and vice versa.
I also finally understand that marriage isn't a bed of roses - no marriage is perfect.  Sometimes the couple will fall. But when they have Christ as their center focus - they'll be able to get back up and walk hand in hand and learn from the mistakes they make (self-centeredness has no room in a God filled marriage).

We as women weren't created to be fulfilled by men or suck the life outta them.  We were created to be their help-meet and to fulfill them.
