Ali - I love your theme - I'm going to use it in my sermon this week.
ReplyDeleteHere's a thought I loved and want to share with you from Rachel Remen's book, "My Grandfather's Blessings", p 159:
"One of the great American dancers of our time, Anna Halprin, told me a memory from her childhood. Her own beloved grandfather was a Hasid, a member of the sect of Judaism that takes joy as the means to worship and experience God. Hasids approach God through the ecstatic, through dance and song. She told me that her grandfather was the holiest man she had known. "Rachel, " she said, "He had twinkling eyes and a long snowy white beard. As a small child, I thought that he was God."
Every Saturday she would run to the synagogue and climb the stairs to the women's section. Sitting there behind the screen, she would look down on the worship service and watch the men dance. "In among them was my grandfather, his arms in the air feet stamping the ground, his black silk coat and snowy white beard shining and his face radiant with joy. And so I knew very young that God danced."
I love the truth that there is ultimate goodness and love at the core of our universe and that brings joy into the center of our lives. It is the foundation for our joy at thanksgiving for the particular things in our lives for which we give thanks.
